A free drop-off recycling collection for ALL COLORS of glass bottles and jars will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2009, from 8:00 am – noon at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. (Enter at Gate 11 at Sangamon Ave. and 8th St.)
Note that other recyclables will NOT be accepted at this collection; only glass bottles, jars or jugs that food or drink came in will be accepted. Please do not bring light bulbs, vases, kitchenware, windowpanes, eyeglasses or other types of glass. PLEASE rinse bottles/jars/jugs clean and remove lids prior to dropoff.
This collection is open to all area residents and is co-sponsored by the City of Springfield and Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Keep America Beautiful and Partners Launch "Recycling Is No Joke" Contest for American Recycles Day
Have you ever thought, "Recycling doesn't make a difference." We hate to be blunt, but you are wrong. It benefits our economy, creates jobs, saves energy and protects natural resources. So help Keep America Beautiful and its partners show that "recycling is no joke" by participating in the first-ever America Recycles Day (ARD) video contest, open to contestants of all ages. Contestants are eligible to win $1,000 if they can make the judges (and the public) laugh.
The video contest runs through October 21, 2011. Submissions can be anything ranging from a one-liner, to a comic strip or skit about recycling, but the video must show recycling in a positive, humorous manner. The video needs to be uploaded to the ARD YouTube page by October 21, 2011, as a response to a short video that explains the competition. The ARD Video Committee will vote on the top 10 winners and upload them to a YouTube playlist on our ARD page by November 8, 2011. During the following week, the public will pick the winning videos by clicking the "like" button associated with their favorite video. Voting ends on America Recycles Day. Full rules found here.

Macon County to Host Paint Collections
Macon County Environmental Management Department is sponsoring drop-off collections of household paint from Macon County residents. Residents may schedule an appointment for an exclusive drop-off time during late afternoon hours on Fridays or participate in mass collection events to be held on Saturday, May 7 and Saturday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. Reservations for the staffed collections on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. may be made by contacting the Macon County Environmental Management Department at 425-4505.
The collections of paints, stains and varnishes, by appointment and during the mass collection events, will be at the Decatur Business Center, 2121 Imboden Court off of the west side of South Rt. 51, south of the South Shores shopping center. For safety and convenience, staff and volunteers will unload accepted items from vehicles. The dropping off of items at times other than the scheduled collections is prohibited.
Household items accepted during the drop-off collections include paints, such as latex, alkyd, enamel and oil based paints, porch, floor and deck paints as well as primers, stains and varnishes. Paint from businesses as well as substances other than paints, stains and varnishes will not be collected, including adhesives, automotive paint, industrial or two-part paint, jointing compounds, roofing tar, solvents, window glazing compound, pesticides, household cleaners, and motor oil.
Prior to the drop-off collections, residents are encouraged to manage empty paint cans and dried paint by placing these items in their residential garbage containers. Lids should be removed from disposed paint cans so garbage haulers may verify that no liquid remains in the cans. Garbage haulers are not to accept paint in its liquid state as it is considered a contaminant and cannot be received at the local landfill.
Residents who are not able to participate in the collections may dispose of paint in their household waste container, provided it is solidified prior to disposal. Small quantities of paint may be solidified by removing the paint can lid and allowing the paint to completely dry, ensuring that open cans of paint are kept away from children, animals and flames. Larger quantities of paint may be mixed with kitty litter to accelerate the solidification process.

Free Electronics Collection April 9
Sangamon County is hosting another Free Electronics Collection on Saturday, April 9th, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. You may enter the State Fairgrounds at Gate 11 ( right across the street from Franny's), and follow the signs.
The following electronics will be accepted: cameras, camcorders, CDs, DVDs, ZIP drives, tape drives, console TVs, power and USB cords and cables, desktop PCs, fax machines, handheld electronic organizers, games, hard drives and PC components, joysticks/game controls, keyboards, laptop PCs, LCD and CRT monitors, mice, pagers, portable CD players, printers (laster, ink jet), radios and stereos, scanners, telephones, TVs, typewriters, VCRs/DVD players, video game players.
Hazardous chemicals, white goods, appliances, and industrial or hazardous chemical products will not be accepted.

Illinois Recycling Association Scholarships Announced
If you're an Illinois resident enrolled in a college program focused on sustainability, environmental science, or related studies, you may be eligible for a $1,500 Illinois Recycled Association (IRA) Scholarship. Read on to determine whether you're eligible and to learn how to apply.
Illinois Recycling Association (IRA) Scholarship Program
The Illinois Recycling Association (IRA) will provide a scholarship to students enrolled in Sustainability, Environmental Science or related studies. The enclosed notice outlines the qualifications for submitting an application for the Illinois Recycling Association (IRA) Scholarship. This year's scholarship is $1,500.00.
It is requested that this notice be circulated among students interested in applying. Applications are to be received electronically no later than April 15, 2011. An application consists of a letter to the Association and submission of the requested information outlined below. Applicants will be rated equally on the following four items:
(1) Their letter to the Committee,
(2) How their curriculum relates to the Sustainability/Science/environmental field,
(3) Their grade point average (in applicable classes and overall),
(4) Their involvement in extra-curricular activities.
Students eligible to be considered must have graduated from an Illinois high school or be a resident of Illinois. The Illinois Recycling Association (IRA) Awards Committee will consider the application and select one student to be awarded the scholarship.
CRITERIA NECESSARY TO COMPETE FOR THE ILLINOIS RECYCLING ASSOCIATION (IRA) SCHOLARSHIP:
* An Illinois resident or graduate of an Illinois High School, majoring in Sustainability, environmental science, engineering, science or related studies at an accredited state college or university.
ALL THAT IS NEEDED IS:
1. A letter explaining why you have chosen your particular field of environmental studies.
2. A list of any extra-curricular activities in which you are or have been involved.
3. A copy of college transcripts and grades for course work completed to date.
4. A letter from your college department head or academic advisor confirming your curriculum.
5. Confirmation from registrar's office as to full time enrollment status and field of study.

Students Tackle Campus Waste for America Recycles Day
If you walked by the front entrance to Menard Hall on Monday, you may have noticed a peculiar sight: A pile of garbage bags sitting on the sidewalk.
No, someone didn't forget to take out the garbage. The bags were piled there as part of the LLCC Environmental Club's display for American Recycles Day.
To bring awareness to the importance of recycling on campus, Environmental Club students searched through bins in Menard and Sangamon Halls on two different occasions last week to find items that could have been recycled. (Here, students Samuel Brady and Audra Allen dig through the garbage to pull out recyclable items.)
It was surprising how often they found recyclable items thrown in the garbage when there were recycling bins right next to the trash cans!
The collection of recyclable materials the students found was displayed in front of Menard Hall on Monday, which was America Recycles Day.
Environmental Club members hung out next to a display that showcased information on the project.
During their one and a half-day collection project, the students gathered 339 plastic bottles, 104 cans, 6.1 pounds of paper.
Given that same rate, the Environmental Club calculated that in one semester, 18,080 bottles, 5,547 aluminum cans, and 325.3 pounds of white paper are thrown in trash cans versus recycling bins in Sangamon and Menard halls alone.
After the display was taken down, Club members took the cans, bottles, and paper to a local recycling center.

Glass Recycling Event Saturday
From 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 2, the city of Springfield is sponsoring a glass recycling drop-off event at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
All colored glass bottles or jars that previously contained food or drink will be accepted. Just leave kitchenware, window glass, and eyewear at home, because these types of glass won't be accepted.
To drop off your bottles, enter the fairgrounds through Gate 11.
And if you can't make it to the glass drive Oct. 2, stay tuned: I'll be sharing info about a recycling drive at the Lincoln Land Community College campus soon.

A new resource provided by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Illinois Recycling Association makes reducing waste at your business, school, or institution easier.
Recycling Works: A Tool Kit for Reducing Waste in the Workplace, is available for download online. The 94-page guide walks you through all the steps involved in successfully developing a waste reduction program at your workplace and provides plenty of terrific resources to help you make it happen.
And it's only one of the many resources available online. Head over to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity website to learn about recycling grant programs in Illinois.
Or visit the U.S. EPA website for a step-by-step guide on setting up a recycling program. And the Sustainable Office Toolkit created by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources provides a handy information module as well.
Regardless of which approach you take for making office recycling happen, our only recommendation is to watch out for Recyclops!

Recycling Works Training for Business
That's when the Illinois Recycling Association (IRA) and Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) will be hosting a free recycling training workshop, "Recycling Works: A Toolkit for Reducing Waste in the Workplace."
The workshop will introduce attendees to the new statewide Online Workplace Recycling Toolkit developed by Shaw Industries. In addition, it features a light lunch and an introduction to the new Springfield Green Business Network.
